The Strips

Commonly known as ‘The Strips’, more formally Greenland Wood, this small area of woodland sits on a steep slope overlooking the River Avon and the town centre. It forms part of the green corridor running through the town.

The Strips run alongside Greenland View on the upper side, Greenland Mills on the lower side, with an entrance at the top of St Margaret’s Hill towards the town centre. The only access is by foot.

This area of woodland was planted by the resident of The Hall, the Moulton family, to improve the view from their home. They planted rows of trees: horse chestnut, pine and lime.

The woodland is managed for its landscape value and to increase biodiversity.

What you’ll find here

There are parallel footpaths running east/west through the strips. One, running from St Margaret’s Hill behind houses of Upper Regent’s Park is surfaced with tarmac, then becomes a stone path to Greenland View.

Other bare earth (sometimes muddy) paths run along the northern edge of the woodland down to Bridge Street.

The paths link the town centre to houses in the south of the town, or the countryside and Widbrook Wood beyond.

Getting here

The Strips is close to the town centre, and can be accessed either via Bridge Street and St Margaret’s Steps or St Margaret’s Hill (about 100 foot of ascent).

The nearest bus stop is Westbury Garden. Wiltshire Council’s town centre car parks are approximately 5 to 10 minutes away on foot.
